India, Brazil to sign VVIP aircraft-purchase deal
Monday, December 1, 2003
New Delhi: India will conclude with Brazil tomorrow the Rs 727-crore deal for the acquisition of five executive jets to be exclusively used for VVIP travel within the country. Brazilian Defence Minister Jose Viegas Filho is arriving here for the signing ceremony in this regard, according to a Defence Ministry Spokesperson here. The twin-engined Embraer-Legacy jets will replace the ageing Avros in the Indian Air Force’s VIP Squadron and the Air Wing of the Border Security Force (BSF) which together ferry the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Deputy PM, Defence Minister and the Service Chiefs around the country. The purchase of the executive jets, made by Brazil’s Embraer company, was cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) last September. Of the five aircraft, four will be procured for the IAF and the remaining one for the BSF’s Air Wing. At present, the VIP Squadron comprises the more than 35-years-old Avros, Boeing 737-200s, and Mi18/Mi17 helicopters. The 19-seater Legacy jets — powered by Rolls Royce engines and capable of a maximum cruise speed of 840 KMPH — are perceived to be safer than the ageing Avros which they will replace. The Brazilian Defence Minister, who is being accompanied by the Commander of the Brazilian Air Force Lieutenant Brigadier Luiz Carlos DaSilva and Embraer’s Vice-President for Defence Markets Romualdo Monteiro de Barros, will meet Defence Minister George Fernandes to discuss a Memorandum of Understanding on defence cooperation between the two countries, the Spokesperson said. A trilateral meeting of representatives of the two countries and the Embraer company will also be held prior to the signing of the agreement for the purchase of the Legacy jets.
